Novel Report : THE BRAVE NEW WORLD by Aldous Huxley

The Brave New World set up was actually a futuristic society. Wherein there is a place called “London Hatchery and Conditioning Centre” from the center’s director. The equivalent of president here is called ‘The Director’, in this society they will predict what will you become in order to make the society systematic and actually to make the system run more organize and smoothly, people are divided into various castes: Alphas, Betas, Gammas, Deltas, and Epsilons. Alphas are smart, tall, and muscular, they are the one who leads an superior; Epsilons short, dumb, and ugly and they are the workers of the society. Alphas have are unique individuals while the other people below the Aphas have clone. Human were made or grow inside the bottles and as they grow up they were condition base on what case they belong. The story begins with three expository chapters describing the futuristic society of World State. In this society, marriage, family, and procreation have been eliminated, and babies are genetically engineered and grown in bottles. Citizens are programmed to be productive and complaisant through a combination of biological manipulation, psychological conditioning, and a drug called soma. A character named Mustapha Mond explains that in the previous era, people suffered from poverty, disease, unhappiness, and wars.Analysis:
In Brave New World, Aldous Huxley give readers a lot information such as, the point of view is incredibly infinite that make us reader know everything about the character. We can not also deny that this novel is a science fiction that if we read we can imagine how amazing the idea that Aldous to create this utopia. It also has a dramatic tone wherein we can read in Lenina’s point of view. This novel is really amazing because the author brings the reader in an environment which is new to hear and the people with different point of view in life.
Well actually the main character of this novel is Bernard an Alpha but he is different in physical aspect that is why he think more different that other alpha and he meet Lenina. Bernard os actually an outsider and want to feel the full range of emotion while Lenina want to follow rules but still question the government but obviously she is really attracted to Bernard. In this Novel I realize and reflect a lot of things.First the “London Hatchery and Conditioning Centre”, this where human grows in a bottle and after the babies and child were condition in what caste they belong. Very Science right? It is not impossible in our society right now, we even have this ‘test tube baby’ that wealthy family afford in order to have a child based on the look they choose. We can analyze that people rely on science more in order to solve their problem.Second, the literature. Bernard and one of his close friend are into Shakespeare literature. In this novel, Shakespeare creation help them find and feel the emotion. In my self realization it is true that history and literature are really important it gives us feelings even though we not yet experience it. Since people today rely more on technology, we set aside the literature which are more helpful. In the world full of people enjoying technology and social media, we need to be Bernard who choose to read literature.Third one is being against the odd. Bernard having a trouble to think what to do that made him hang himself at end of the story. Conclusion:Who else wouldn’t do that of you live in that type of world. Working 24/7 in order to fullfill your role in the society without showing emotion and having an affair with as many as peiple you want and having sex with anyone you ant and even required an orgy porgy at least once a week.It is possible, yes it is, in the real world, we can see that suicide rate is now increasing and most of them are the youth, why? Because we are being dictated by society of what we should do. We set aside our emotion and choose to fullfill not our dreams, not what we want and not what we wish to do but what the society want for us. What society we will have if the people are not willing on what they are doing? We might end up being Bernard, who oppose the government and oppose the majority way of thinking. We dont need this kind of world wherein we are given an especific role to do and being controlled, yes we might end up being this kind of society but for me we can do it. We can survive meeting the the expectation of the world while doing what we want. We just need to be understanding.Disclaimer:This is just my point of view and understanding about the novel. You are free to give yours and ask question for clarification.Ratings:
5 Star – Beyond ExcellentI don’t really like novel with this type of genre but it hooked me and really gives me chill because it is out of ordinary mind to read and really good to relate in our society. It has many hidden message.

What does literature reflect about the Western culture and philosophy?

Aphra Behn : Song

Since I am the one who is assigned to report for Aphra Behn I realize how grateful I am to know her life. She has been through hardship when she lived and as women they are degraded way back them and Love?

Ow I love how she described love in her literature. She said that we will feel everthing in love. Especially the pain that she been through.

“Love is a disease that we are glad to have”

Love is wonderful and we are grateful to feel this feeling.

Sappho

In sappho lyric poetry we can see how she adore and appreciate beauty of women. It is easy to understand and interpret Sappho’s creation because it is frank and simple. This line is the most memorable to me since it is really true. We may not think what is other think of us now but we must think what will people in the future think of us.

“You may forget but let me tell you this: someone in some future time will think of us”

And that reflection of her literature in the culture and philosophy of ancient Greece is women don’t have much privelege in education.Dante Aligherie

Inferno

Dante’s Inferno was really fantastic one it is like reality and fantasy in one literature. It is enchanting poem that everyone is interested because people are more curious on what will happen after we die.It reflects that people in West are more after on the consequence of what they do and also the punishment. The nine circle of hell reflects how western people think of the equal consequences of bad things they do.

OEDIPUS REX

Of all story this one is full of irony. Well imagine if you read this full story you will mind blown knowing that he married with his mother.Well the truth is they listen to an oracle on what will happen in the future that is why they throw their son. This one reflects that western people believe with this kind of activity like us Asian people.Despite of knowing the truth he still pursue to seek for it to know what will happen. This show that western people are knowledge seeker and they still go for truthfulness even though it is hurtful.
“How dreadful the knowledge of the truth can be.

Don Quixote : by Miguel Cervantes

This one was comedic one. Well for me it reflects to soldiers in West. Wherein they are really into serving the public to the extent that even thought they are already old they still want to serve. And one thing that made me respect them is what don Quixote told to Sancho. That there is no time for resting and eating when you were serving and fighting. This is really true. Even though Don quixote is failing in terms of age but still her values, principles and philosophy are still living like what western people do.

To end this blog. This qoute from Don Quixote touch my heart. Maybe not only people from west but also people around the world should have think of this. It is important to know who are we and what are we to know what we can fo and what must we do.

What do the mores and traditions of Asia and Middle East reveal about the people of oldest civilization?

As we discuss and tackle excerpts from The epic of Gilgamesh, The Journey to the West and Sei Shonagon’s collection of essays, The Pillow Book Translated by Ivan Morris we also learn values and traditions of Asia way back then and reveal some information about their civilization.

For example in the story of epic of Gilgamesh it reflect that people believe in many type of God and Goddesses, there are variation unlike in some place they only believe in one. They believe that it also better to die in war than to die in other way because it shows honor to an individual. It seems that people in first civilization are more focus in strength and pride they can bring on their town and self.

In some excerpt that we discuss in The Journey to the West we learn many values in here even though it was a fictional like The epic of Gilgamesh but still reflect mores of people who live that time. It shows that Wukong there seek help to a monk in order to achieve his mindfulness and can use his ability in a good way by meditation and learn discipline. Like what chinese people do now a days meditating and monk are part of their life and tradition. We can see that Wukong also is an individual who is able to change himself and seek to be a good one and to help other in this way it show some traits of people in Asia.

In the Sei Shonagon’s collection of essays, The Pillow Book Translated by Ivan Morris, this one is different among those two novel that we discuss because Shonagon’s collection is a non-fiction novel. It is a diary of Sei compose of her observation on what is happening during her time. She made a list about it like Hateful things she indicate activity and habits that people around her that made her hate it. It reveals that Sei is also living in a poor place and way back then there are ranking in their society based on their status. It gives us an idea how observant people are in that time and women are also in the lower rank than men so there are gender inequality that time.

Love, Rosie < 3

Love, Rosie a novel by Cecilia Ahern. Love, Rosie is a romance comedy with slice of life novel who is originally known as Where Rainbows End with the same author who already wrote many novels. About this novel is a lady who is in her eighteen named Rosie Dunne. She is in her senior high school and preparing for her college. She also have a guy best friend, Alex Stewart, they grow up together since they were 5 years old. They both want to study college outside England but the thing is Rosie got pregnant with Greg. What I like about this novel is because Rosie’s dream is to have her own hotel and manage it but since she got pregnant out of plan everything about her dream seems to fade away but at the end she still manage to make her dreams come true, she was inspired by his father who died but still made his dream come true to travel in Mediterranean even though it’s already too late . It teach me that no matter what happen, whatever struggle it is, there will be always a way to make things possible. In this novel Rosie already passed her exam in her dream university who specializes in hotel management course, her father really do support her but because of that one incident everything became different. It seems that we will never know what we will happen to us, we don’t know hat will happen next or in future, we cannot control everything and even there are hindrance we should not lose hope.

Love? Well in this novel, remember she has a guy best friend named Alex. Rosie didn’t know that she accidentally kissed Alex when she was drunk and when Rosie told him that forget everything Alex thought that she means about the kiss but she was talking about her being wild that night. So since they were eighteen they keep their feelings to each other and take each other for granted until they hate each but because still reconcile and one thing amazing is they end up being together at the age of fifty years old! That was so amazing because when it comes to love, life and making the right choices, Rosie and Alex are contradicting .I learned that you will not meet the one for you easily maybe you already knew him/her but still it takes time to find true love. So for my generation, don’t hurry everything specially love. Feelings and emotion matter the most it will affect everything in you if you will not take care of it.

I really recommend this novel, yes it is a love story but you will find many things about life in this novel that will help you and make you realize that life is not race, we have our own time to shine maybe not now but the important thing is it will come and also Love, Rosie will teach you lesson about being a adolescence where in you face life changing decision and making right choices.
